Entrepreneur Decision Study

Thank you for your interest in the results of this important research.

The Study

This study explored  how entrepreneurs start new businesses by examining patterns in startup decision making at nearly 200 emerging businesses.

Much current research in entrepreneurship stresses decision making as a key to finding a suitable opportunity and starting a successful new business. Many scholars and businesspeople assume that better understanding of decision making will allow future entrepreneurs to make more effective entry decisions with greater confidence of success. However, the current study’s findings do not support this position. This study finds that startups’ successes do not result from sound decision making. Evidence suggests that complexity, uncertainty, and surprise are much stronger forces.

The study employed a web-based questionnaire, which is documented in the dissertation appendix. The questionnaire collected information about entreprneurs' startup decisions, and about seven measures of post-startup success. Because the questionnaire collected no individually identifiable information, findings do not inlcude information about the success of individual businesses.

Context

The research for this study was conducted as part of a dissertation research project. The survey was conducted in Winter/Spring 2008, and the dissertation was completed and published to UMI in Fall of 2008. The research supports a Doctor of Management degree from University of Maryland University College (UMUC), a member of the University of Maryland system.
